This man was honoured by the Indian President for promoting organic farming

Rohit Ram Sahu, hailing from Chhattisgarh, has achieved such a remarkable feat in farming that he has been honoured by Indian President Ram Nath Kovind himself.

Rohit, a resident of Patan in Durg district, has been working towards the promotion of organic farming in his village. For his contribution to agriculture, he was honoured by the state government and received an award from the Indian president at the Rajyotsav programme in Raipur on November 5.

Rohit, who carries out organic farming on nearly 18 acres of land, says this zero-budget farming not only increases the land’s productivity but is also beneficial for one’s health. Although the yield initially seems less as compared to traditional farming, it is just a misconception.

Five years ago, while working with a local farmer, he saw the latter get a skin infection because of coming into contact with a chemical fertiliser. Rohit immediately approached agro expert Alok Mishra and narrated the incident to him. Alok suggested applying ghee on the infection, which ended up providing relief to the farmer.

The incident left a deep impact on Rohit, and he decided to practise farming without chemical fertilisers or pesticides, the use of which not only affects yield but also degrades the quality of the land. To understand organic farming, he attended a five-day training programme in Devalpara, Nagpur, and a two-day training programme at Chhattisgarh Kamdhenu University.

Born and brought up in Achanakpur, he completed his studies at a government school and went on to study political science at a local college. He then became active in regional politics, and also participated in the Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha elections.

Rohit says it was initially difficult as others would mock him, wondering how anyone could practise farming without the use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides. However, he achieved the seemingly impossible and encouraged other farmers to take up organic farming as well.

Now, farmers in many of Chhattisgarh's districts like Mahasamund, Arang, and Dhamtari have embraced organic farming. This has also provided employment to the local women of Achanakpur, who now manufacture and sell organic products.
