Science not clear yet on GM crops: Jaipal Reddy

New Delhi: Newly-appointed Science and Technology Minister S Jaipal Reddy today said science was not clear yet on the issue of GM crops and it should not be treated as an ideological issue.

"I think the problem of GM crops is under discussion at the global level. Scientific consensus has not finally emerged. Debate is on at a global level. Science is not clear yet," he told reporters here.

He said a panel of experts appointed by the Supreme Court had submitted an interim report on GM crops to the apex court recently.

"I don't think it should be treated as an ideological issue but as a scientific issue... The ministry requires more time to study the interim report," Reddy said, adding that he was not in a position to give a final view on an interim report.

His remarks come in the wake of a statement earlier this month by Scientific Advisory Committee to the Prime Minister, headed by eminent scientist C N R Rao, favouring introduction of GM crops.

The science panel had argued that technology had potential to transform Indian agriculture.

The SAC-PM had underscored the need to improve the regulatory structure on genetically modified farm produce.

Reddy said Indian science was at an advanced stage to engage and participate in the global debate on the issue.

A raging debate is on within and outside the Supreme Court on the safety and efficacy of GM crops with scientists pitted in favour and against transgenic food.

Anti-GM crops activists have launched a shrill campaign to push for a ban on genetically modified crops and the issue is before the Supreme Court.

Only Organics Can Feed the Hungry World: Here’s Why

A new approach to agriculture that combines the best in industrial production with organic and sustainable practices is the key to meeting the changing needs of a changing world, where resources are rapidly depleted by a growing population.

“Are Organic Foods Safer or Healthier Than Conventional Alternatives?” is the title of a controversial report released last week by Stanford University’s Center For Health Policy. The study concludes that there is “little evidence of health benefit” from eating organic food.” The meta-analysis of more than 200 separate studies found that organic products were no more nutritious – based on vitamin and mineral content – than conventionally-grown meats and vegetables.
The press weighed in with a bewildering range of instant reactions. The New York Times published an op-ed disparaging the “fad” in buying organic, claiming that it offered “no obvious health benefits” over cheaper conventionally-produced foods and calling it an “elitist, pseudoscientific indulgence shot through with hype.”
The LA Times, on the other hand, pointed out in an editorial that the study largely ignored the ill effects of pesticide residues on conventionally-grown produce, and the hormones and antibiotic-resistant bacteria that taint factory-farmed meat and poultry. It also failed to look at processed foods, the health impact of the chemical food additives, dyes, preservatives and genetically modified foods which are allowed in conventional products, but not in those which are labeled “organic.”
But what most of the media responses to the Stanford analysis ignored is the most compelling argument of all for organic growing – which is the environmental impact of its opposite, the chemical-intensive agriculture that dominates the American landscape and much of the globe.
My own appreciation for organic agriculture dates to a conversation that I had years ago with a cotton grower from the Central Valley of California who told me about his switch from conventional to organic growing. We talked about the benefits to the water, soil and ecosystem of farming without toxic chemicals. But what struck me most was his sheer boyish enthusiasm for a line of work that in my urban arrogance I had envisioned as backbreaking, mindless and numbingly routine.
Thanks to the switch to organics, he said, farming had become for him a labor of love – and also an intellectual challenge that required him to think out new approaches to controlling pests and maintaining soil fertility, rather than depending on standardized applications of toxic chemicals and petroleum-based fertilizers.
“When I started out farming,” he told me, “it was like showing up at an assembly line day in and day out. You work with heavy machinery – combines, planters, sprayers and harvesters – and can spend an entire growing season without actually getting any dirt underneath your fingernails.”
Going organic, on the other hand, had forced him to pay attention in a whole new way to what was actually happening on his land. “It is not like playing a pre-set score. It’s more like jazz: You improvise; you respond to the world around you.” Organic growers, he explained, are constantly innovating, trying out new locally-adapted seed varieties, rotating crops, plowing back stalks and other organic residues, planting cover crops, and experimenting with a variety of natural approaches to controlling weeds and insect pests in response to changes in the weather, in insect populations and soil vitality.
Organics can be tougher to get right than conventional agriculture, he conceded. But precisely because it is far more “hands on,” it also tends to be more rewarding. “It brought me back in touch with nature,” the cotton farmer effused. “I rediscovered what farming is all about.”
I remembered these words the other day when I read about yet another study, this one conducted by McGill University in Montreal and the University of Minnesota, a statistical synthesis of 66 separate studies that compared organic with conventional agriculture. The conclusion published in the journal Nature: Organic Is Not as Efficient as Its Big Ag Rival – at least when judged according to the holy grail of yield-per-acre.
No surprise there. If all that matters is the sheer volume of food that can be produced on a given plot of land, then chemical-intensive farming is the hands-down winner – although organics are closing the gap, especially in certain fruits, legumes and leafy vegetables, where the productivity of the two methods are essentially equal. But for big cash crops like corn, soybeans and wheat, conventional agriculture still produces more than 25 percent more per acre.
Nobody disputes the fact that modern agriculture is fabulously productive. A single acre of farmland in Iowa produces 170 bushels of corn. But the rub is that, while industrial agriculture produces more “calories-per-acre,” it can scarcely be called more efficient than organic, if efficiency includes the full environmental costs and not just the narrow question of yield-per-acre.
Farming today requires massive inputs of fossil fuels to run big machinery and produce the petroleum-based fertilizers and agrochemicals that it depends on; and it employs methods that deplete the soil of nutrients and use water less efficiently than organics. It also kills birds, bees and other pollinators with toxic pesticides and herbicides, and exhausts and pollutes the groundwater. Moreover, dependence on heavy machinery and over-plowing contributes to the erosion of untold millions of tons of irreplaceable topsoil per acre every year.
And the impacts are felt far beyond the farmers’ fields. Commercial fisheries in the Gulf of Mexico, Chesapeake Bay and elsewhere are threatened by dead zones – some the size of the state of New Jersey – caused by algae blooms fed by nitrogen and phosphorous runoff from conventional farms. Nitrogen-based fertilizers also contribute significantly to the release into the atmosphere of nitrous oxide, a leading greenhouse gas with more than 300 times the heat-trapping impact of carbon dioxide. The New York Times reports that nearly a third of all the planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions come from agriculture and forestry.
All of these factors need to be weighed when assessing the efficiency – not to mention the sustainability – of our current agricultural system.
Still, one of the questions that advocates of organics frequently run up against is whether its generally smaller-scale operations and lower yields can ever hope to feed the world. Development experts counter that feeding the hungry is not simply a matter of growing more food, but of producing the right kinds of foods in the right places, and finding ways of getting it into the hands of those who need it.
This is where the current system is failing. Take the 170 bushels of corn grown on the typical acre in Iowa. Most of that grain is being fed to cattle. Yet meat production is a notoriously inefficient way to feed the hungry. The ratio of fossil-fuel energy required to produce one unit of food energy is 35:1 for beef production, compared to 3:1 on average for all other agricultural products.
The bottom line is that growing feed for livestock creates only one-tenth of the food-per-acre that growing grains and vegetables for human consumption does.
That may not be a problem for Americans with our large food surpluses and relative affluence. But the impact in poor countries is more problematic. Huge swaths of the Brazilian rainforest and other regions in the global south are being cleared to grow soybeans to feed beef cattle in the US – with the result in many places that thousands of small farmers are being forced out to make way for large-scale industrial agriculture.
If we are serious about tackling world hunger, many agronomists argue, then we will need to keep those farmers on their land growing food for local consumption, rather than using it to produce cheap hamburgers for the global fast food industry. And we will also need to shift production to lower-tech, more diverse, less energy- and chemical-intensive modes of growing. This was the conclusion of the UN and World Bank’s “International Assessment of Agricultural Knowledge, Science and Technology for Development.” Widely regarded as the most comprehensive study to date of global agriculture, the 2008 report called for “food sovereignty” an approach that favors small-scale sustainable agriculture over the export-driven factory farming which is being pushed by large multinational corporations.
The fact is that farmers in the Third World often can’t afford the expensive agro-chemicals, patented genetically modified seeds and the latest oil-guzzling farm equipment. For the rural poor, low cost natural farming methods may be a better way to get food to their families and neighbors who need it.
As Hans Herren, an agriculture development expert and president of the Millennium Institute, told Mother Jones Magazine: “We don’t need to grow more food, we need to shift what we grow, where we grow it and who grows it.”More attention should be paid, in other words, to developing small-scale regional agriculture. Locally-adapted seeds need to be developed, and low-input methods developed that are suitable to the climate and soils. Herren says that yields in Third World countries could be doubled almost overnight if farmers were properly trained. For its own part, the developed world would do well to, “grow less food and focus more on things like improving quality and building soil.”
At present, 11 percent of the fruits and vegetables consumed in the U.S, are organically grown. Yet less than 1 percent of the research budget of the USDA goes toward improving organic farming methods. The other 99 percent is spent on research designed to enhance industrial agriculture. This amounts to a huge ongoing subsidy for Big Ag. If we shifted research spending toward developing sustainable agriculture, organic farming could gradually boost its productivity to rival that of chemical-intensive growing.
Actually, the question is not – as it is routinely framed by the media – whether organic or conventional agriculture can better feed the world. There is no way to turn back the clock to a purer age when farming was pursued without chemicals and heavy farm equipment.
Modern agriculture is here to stay. But it does need to change – because the world itself is changing: Underground aquifers are drying out, bees and other pollinators are dying, the climate is getting hotter and drier in many places (witness this summer’s historic droughts in the Midwest.) Arable land is declining worldwide. Desertification is encroaching on huge swaths of Africa, China and elsewhere. And, in what Foreign Policy Magazine called “the gravest natural resource shortage you’ve never heard of,” the world’s reserves of phosphorus, which is essential in fertilizer production, are rapidly being depleted to the point of exhaustion.
All of this means that farmers will need to learn how to grow our food more sustainably. And we need to reverse the trend toward mindlessly increasing the acreage devoted to meat production. Neither organic nor conventional agriculture can do it alone. We will have to develop a “hybrid path in agriculture,” according to the Nature study cited earlier, an approach which combines the best in industrial production with organic and sustainable practices. Only then can we hope to feed the billions of new mouths that are expected in the coming decades, and preserve the earth and its irreplaceable farmlands for future generations.

On World Food Day, India's women farmers show the way
Hyderabad The 34th World Food Day is being observed today. As shortage of food introduces new challenges, a group of dalit women farmers in Medak district in Andhra Pradesh are working steadfastly towards preserving traditional farming practices, an effort which will help India tackle the serious malnutrition challenge it faces. 

Applying and spreading their traditional knowledge of seeds, these Dalit women farmers are using biodiversity as a weapon against hunger, malnutrition, erratic monsoon and climate change. Their effort will earn these villages the status of being declared an agri-biodiversity heritage site.

Encouraging their children to take up agriculture, these women farmers are passing on their knowledge of traditional farming practices. 

"Our children see a future in it. Even my daughter-in-law listens to me and is learning all about seeds," says Chandramma, a farmer from the Medak district of Andhra Pradesh. 

Chandramma and many more like her are working to pass on the traditional knowledge of bio-diversity in agriculture. 

Every season, these women sift through dozens of varieties of seeds and meticulously store the choicest seeds of dryland crops like bajra, jowar, pulses and oilseeds to be sown next season. Putting Rabi and Kharif crop together, at least 85 different varieties of seed are grown, says another farmer Lakshmamma. 

According to the National convenor of Millet Network of India, P.V Satheesh, these women grow 12 types of crops in one acre. 

"Some grow when there is no rain and some others can withstand excess water. This is intrinsically risk-insured agriculture. That is where the future seems to lie," he adds. 

In January this year, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had called the problem of malnutrition a matter of 'national shame'. 

"Despite impressive growth in our GDP, the level of under-nutrition in the country is unacceptably high," he had said while releasing a report on Hunger and Malnutrition (HUNGaMA).

By bringing in biodiversity in agriculture, these woman farmers are paving the way to address the nation's challenges in the area of malnutrition. 

Father of India's Green Revolution Dr M.S.Swaminathan calls millets 'climate-smart nutri-cereals' that can be the answer to the challenges of food and nutrition security facing India.

"Once millets are introduced in the public distribution system and awareness grows about their nutritional value, it will give a big boost, after all the Prime Minister has said that the biggest national shame is that 42-45 per cent of our women and children are still malnourished and undernourished," says Mr Swaminathan. 

By educating others, these women farmers of Medak are arming the future generations with vital knowledge which will play an increasingly important role in addressing the challenges like hunger, nutrition, health, ecology and livelihood in India.

Russia's small-scale organic agriculture model may hold the key to feeding the world

(NaturalNews) Imagine living in a country where having the freedom to cultivate your own land, tax-free and without government interference, is not only common but also encouraged for the purpose of promoting individual sovereignty and strong, healthy communities. Now imagine that in this same country, nearly all of your neighbors also cultivate their own land as part of a vast network of decentralized, self-sustaining, independent "eco-villages" that produce more than enough food to feed the entire country.

You might be thinking this sounds like some kind of utopian interpretation of historical America, but the country actually being described here is modern-day Russia. It turns out that Russia's current agricultural model is one that thrives as a result of the millions of small-scale, family-owned and -operated, organically-cultivated farms that together produce the vast majority of the food consumed throughout the country.

Do Russians have more food freedom, independence than Americans?

A far cry from the unsustainable, chemical-dependent, industrialized agriculture system that dominates the American landscape today, Russia's agricultural system, which is not technically a system at all, is run by the people and for the people. Thanks to government policies there that actually encourage autonomous family farming, rather than cater to the greed of chemical and biotechnology companies like they do here in the states, the vast majority of Russians are able and willing to grow their own food on privately-owned family plots known as "dachas."

According to The Bovine, Russia's Private Garden Plot Act, which was signed into law back in 2003, entitles every Russian citizen to a private plot of land, free of charge, ranging in size from 2.2 acres to 6.8 acres. Each plot can be used for growing food, or for simply vacationing or relaxing, and the government has agreed not to tax this land. And the result of this effort has been phenomenal, as Russian families collectively grow practically all the food they need.

"Essentially, what Russian gardeners do is demonstrate that gardeners can feed the world -- and you do not need any GMOs, industrial farms, or any other technological gimmicks to guarantee everybody's got enough food to eat," writes Leonid Sharashkin, editor of the English version of the The Ringing Cedars series, a book collection that explains the history behind this effort to reconnect people with the earth and nature. Most food in Russia comes from backyard gardens

Back in 1999, it was estimated that 35 million small family plots throughout Russia, operated by 105 million people, or 71 percent of the Russian population, were producing about 50 percent of the nation's milk supply, 60 percent of its meat supply, 87 percent of its berry and fruit supply, 77 percent of its vegetable supply, and an astounding 92 percent of its potato supply. The average Russian citizen, in other words, is fully empowered under this model to grow his own food, and meet the needs of his family and local community.

"Bear in mind that Russia only has 110 days of growing season per year -- so in the U.S., for example, gardeners' output could be substantially greater. Today; however, the area taken up by lawns in the U.S. is two times greater than that of Russia's gardens -- and it produces nothing but a multi-billion-dollar lawn care industry."

The backyard gardening model is so effective throughout Russia that total output represents more than 50 percent of the nation's entire agricultural output. Based on 2004 figures, the collective value of all the backyard produce grown in Russia is $14 billion, or 2.3 percent of Russia's gross domestic product (GDP) -- and this number only continues to increase as more and more Russians join the eco-village movement.

Why the World Needs a Renaissance of Small Farming

The greed for profit is ruining agriculture – and the world – but the trend for local shops and farmers’ markets offers real hope

British farmers can’t produce pigs as cheaply as the Poles, or cattle feed as cheaply as the Brazilians, or milk as cheaply as the Americans, or fruit as cheaply as the Spanish, and if they can’t pull their socks up, the market dictates, they will just have to go. According to a recent survey by the National Pig Association, about 100 small- to medium-sized pig farmers are likely to quit this year – which is 10% of them. We are losing dairy farmers by the score every month. Horticulture has long since gone by the board (whatever happened to “the garden of England”, aka Kent?). Only about 1% of people in Britain now work on the land.

But it’s the same everywhere. The traditional farmers of Africa and Asia are urged to give up growing food for their own people and raise commodity crops for us, in exchange for our money, which we make by banking. Of course farms should be as big as possible to achieve economies of scale, and labour must be reduced to cut costs, so most of the existing small farmers, men and women, must go. Hundreds of thousands have committed suicide in India, but most flee to the cities to join the estimated billion rural exiles who now live in urban slums (almost a third of the urban population of the country).
Objective data, of the kind that the scientists and economists who advise the powers-that-be claim to base their ideas upon, suggests that the new ways aren’t working – not, at least, if we feel that the job of agriculture is to produce good food.Worldwide, 1 billion people of the present 7 billion are chronically undernourished, while another billion are chronically overnourished – such that according to an article in Nature in May the world population of diabetics now exceeds the combined population of the US and Canada, and almost all because of diet. Damage to the world at large is huge. Mainly because of industrial farming, half of all species on Earth could be extinct by the end of the century. Agriculture occupies 40% of the planet’s land, but its pollution endangers creatures everywhere, including the seas, where farming run-off is destroying the coral reefs.
But the corporate-government complex that runs our lives is committed to the all-out financial competition of the neoliberal global market. So British farmers in British conditions in a British social context are head to head with peasant Africans and US mega-corporates and Ukrainian grain barons (or would be were it not for the EU subsidies) – while farming as a whole must compete for investment with cars, weapons, casinos and hair-dressing.
If British farmers can’t produce more cash in the short term than the Poles or the Brazilians (or the corporates who are billeted in their countries) then they just have to go. Indeed, Tony Blair’s government just a few years ago seriously mooted that British farming should go the way of its mining. It may seem hard, even vile, but, as Lady Thatcher assured us all those years ago, “there is no alternative” – and all British governments since, even those with “Labour” in the title, have taken this as gospel. The strangely-titled National Farmers Union is firmly committed to big business.
The deep trouble is the huge clash between morality, biological reality, and the present economy. Until and unless we bring the three into line, we are bound to be in trouble. More than that, we need to acknowledge that morality (what is good) and biological reality (what is necessary and possible) must lead, and the economy must be secondary. As John Maynard Keynes said many decades ago: economics must “take the back seat” and we should focus first on “our real problems, of life and human relations, of creation, and of behaviour and religion”.
If we don’t acknowledge the moral obligation to provide good food for everyone without wrecking the rest, then what does morality mean? There is no excuse for the present failure – for sound biological thinking shows that good food for everyone should be eminently possible. But report after report – the kind governments and big organisations choose to override – tells us that the best way to ensure that everyone is well fed, sustainably and securely, is through farms that are mixed, complex and low-input (quasi-organic). These must be labour-intensive (or there can be no complexity), so there is no advantage in them being large scale. Such farms are traditional in structure, but they need not be traditional in technology. They would benefit from good technologies and science.
But the small-to-medium mixed farms that could feed us well and provide good jobs are absolutely at odds with the modern perceived imperative to maximise wealth. To survive in the fight for profit, skilled labour must be replaced with big machines and agrochemistry; the husbandry must be simplified – monoculture rules – and all must be done on the largest possible scale. Although industrial farming doesn’t feed everybody, has led to mass unemployment and the poverty and despair that go with it, and is wrecking the fabric of the world, it must prevail because it produces piles of short-term cash for the people who are calling the shots.
We need to turn things round and fast. And we means us, all of us – ordinary Joes, because the governments and corporates who run the world, and their attendant experts and intellectuals, are not going to. The standard ways to bring about change are by reform or revolution – but reform is too slow and today’s politicians and the big business they are beholden to cannot change course. Revolution is too chancy and too dangerous.
So we need the third route – renaissance: build something better in situ. In effect, a people’s takeover. All over the world individuals and communities are starting small mixed farms of the kind the world really needs, while others are starting small shops and farmers’ markets and delivery services to serve those new farms. Thousands of organisations worldwide are seeking to promote and co-ordinate these efforts.

For all that millions have caved in to the goodness and healthiness that upholds the tag organic, it is still considered out of the reach of the hoi polloi. But Sriram Sridharan and Anand Chandrashekaran, owners of a specialty store called Gormei Market, which is the first and only outlet in the city to stock organic vegetables, fruits and milk on a daily basis are hoping to change that mindset. Says Sriram, “The problem with Chennai right now is that organic is still a boutique model where the products are packed and sold to a particular group of customers. We want to change that and make it a retailing model.”
Making fresh produce available each day was definitely an expensive choice for the two who started the store seven months ago, but the choice came more from their commitment to the organic cause, admits Anand. “The cost is definitely more for us, but it doesn’t affect the price that our customers pay,” he explains as Sriram adds, “Our organic products are some of the cheapest in Chennai.”
The duo are even experimenting with an unique pricing model, that they feel might make more people willing to take the first step towards making the switch to organic. “We’ve flat-priced the cost of our vegetables. Customers can pick whatever they want, how much ever they want, and we’ll weigh it as a bunch and charge Rs 50 flat,” explains Sriram.
Even as they argue that the price of organic produce is not market-driven and it gives them the leeway to play around with pricing schemes, Anand and Sriram maintain that this model of pricing is the easier way out for them. So how do they make ends meet? “We are weak in math,” Anand jests, but Sriram cuts in, “It’s more work for us to price the products individually each day, because the supply price is constant. It actually solves a lot of our headache.”
Having just recently inaugurated their second outlet in Chennai, Anand and Sriram say that the number of takers for organic products in the city has definitely increased. “There is a specific audience for it and it’s not yet accepted into the mainstream, but there has been an increase in the number of people coming in to buy organic products,” says Sriram. The fact that they’ve added two more brands to their list of organic staples is an indication of the increase, points out Anand.
But despite the fact that they are happy about the increase in the number of takers for organic products, Anand and Sriram admit that they’ve answered their fair share of skeptical questions. Is it really organic? Yes, they try to tell their customers. How do you know, they get questioned again. “Firstly, we sell certified organic stuff, which means we believe a third party certification,” explains Sriram. Explaining how they can confidently vouch for their fruits, vegetables and milk, he says that they’re all directly sourced by them from farms they’ve personally visited. “We source the fruits and vegetables from farms in Ooty, near Puducherry and another near the outskirts of Tamil Nadu. We get our milk from a farm in Erode,” he adds.
Recently Sriram and his friend Hima Anugula took a 2,000-km road trip around Tamil Nadu, visiting as many farms as they could. “It was an eye-opening trip,” says Sriram. “We learnt about different things in farming.”
The one big problem with organic products that they are trying to tackle is to try and change the selling structure. “People think that selling organic and conventional stuff in the same store is like doing injustice to the organic products,” complains Sriram. “When the entire world is in transition, how can a complete organic store survive,” he further questions. Anand closes the case by cataloging Gormei Market’s range of staples, chocolates, cheeses, gluten-free products, apart from exotic vegetables and imported brands of pastas and sauces.

Organic farming big job provider: Assocham Study

Organic farming can generate about 80 lakh jobs in Odisha during the next five years. It has the potential to create 60 lakh jobs in the State and another 20 lakh jobs if on-farm storing, processing, value addition, packaging and marketing facilities are included, industry body Assocham said here on Wednesday.
 In its study ‘Organic Odisha: Inching towards Organic Farming,’ Assocham said organic farming can lead to wealth accumulation of about ` 23,000 crore and generate exports worth ` 600 crore during the five years. Of the total organically certified area of 1.7 lakh hectares (ha) across the country, Odisha has the maximum area of over 26,300 ha followed by Jammu and Kashmir (22,316 ha) and Rajasthan (22,105 ha).
 “Adoption of organic farming can increase net per capita income of a farmer in the State by a whopping 250 per cent - from a meagre ` 3,000 now to over ` 10,500 in the next five years,” Assocham national secretary general DS Rawat said after releasing the study. “This will also arrest migration for jobs,” he added.
 Rawat said Odisha has a huge role to take India’s share in global organic exports from about 0.2 per cent to about 2.5 per cent by 2017. Besides, the State has the potential of being India’s export hub for certified organic food to different world markets, he added.
 The chamber said over 80 per cent of farmers in Odisha use less fertilisers and pesticides. Organic farming in Odisha is a default practice. Cotton, turmeric, ginger, niger and some varieties of pulses are the organic crops produced in Odisha and efforts are being made to produce pulses like arhar, moong along with honey, garlic, chilli, medicinal plants and others.
 Assocham has also proposed formation of a national commission for organic agriculture with participation of private sector. Besides, an organic food council can also be set up to institutionalise policy dialogues between the government and organic sector, it said. It also suggested the Government to promote the concept to set up an organic village in each district to encourage usage of organic fertilisers to protect the land from residual effects of the chemical fertilisers.

Stanford Organics Study A “Fraud” – Linked to Cargill & Tobacco Money

A new study, issued by scientists at the Freeman Spogli institute at Stanford university in California, that suggests that organic food has no medical or health values is deeply flawed, say outraged activists.

Media coverage of the scientific paper that was published in the Annals of Internal Medicine last week was mostly supportive, as is customary for studies from famous universities. "Organic Food 'Not Any Healthier," wrote a BBC journalist, while the New York Times published an article titled "Stanford Scientists Cast Doubt on Advantages of Organic Meat and Produce."

NGOs immediately questioned the conclusions of the study. "There was just no way that truly independent scientists with the expertise required to adequately answer such an important question would ignore the vast and growing body of scientific literature pointing to serious health risks from eating foods produced with synthetic chemicals," says Charlotte Vallaeys, food and farm policy director at the Cornucopia Institute Institute, an organic farm policy organization in Wisconsin.

"Make no mistake, the Stanford organics study is a fraud," says Mike Adams of Naturalnews.com and Anthony Gucciardi of Naturalsociety.org. "The mainstream media has fallen for an elaborate scientific hoax that sought to destroy the credibility of organic foods by claiming they are "no healthier" than conventional foods (grown with pesticides and genetically modified organisms).”

Adams and Gucciardi note that Dr. Ingram Olkin, a co-author of the organics study and a professor emeritus in statistics at Stanford, has deep financial ties to Cargill, the agribusiness multinational which sells genetically engineered foods. Olkin also accepted money from the tobacco industry’s Council for Tobacco Research, according to letters dating back to 1976.

“I learned, in visiting with Dr. Olkin, that he would like to examine the theoretical structure of the "multivariate logistic risk function." This particular statistical technique has been employed in the analysis of the Framingham study of heart disease,” wrote William W. Shinn, a lawyer with Shook Hardy & Bacon who represented the tobacco industry's Committee of Counsel at the time. “He is asking for two years of support at the rate of $6,000 per year … We believe that a modest effort now may stimulate, a broader interest in such questions especially among theoretical statisticians at Stanford and elsewhere. Dr. Gardner has reviewed and approved the proposal.”

“To say that conventional foods are safe is like saying that cigarettes are safe,” adds Adams. “Both can be propagandized with fraudulent science funded by corporate donations to universities, and we’re seeing the same scientist who helped Big Tobacco now helping Big Biotech in their attempt to defraud the public."

Stanford University has reacted to the controversy in a defensive manner: “This paper was published in a reputable, peer-reviewed journal, and the researchers received no funding for the study from any outside company. We stand by the work and the study authors,” the university is quoted as saying in the Los Angeles Times. “Stanford Center for Health Policy (where the study was conducted) has never received research money from Cargill.”

One of the reasons that the Stanford study has become a lightning rod is a ballot initiative that California voters will be asked to vote on in November. Proposition 37 will require labeling on raw or processed food “if the food is made from plants or animals with genetic material changed in specified ways” and also “prohibit labeling or advertising such food as ‘natural.’”
