COMPILATION : Govt Initiatives in promoting Indigenous Seeds & Organic Farming in West Bengal

Under Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY)

10 Folk Rice Varieties (Keralasundari, Bahurupi, Radhatilak, Govindbhog, Dudeswar, Kaminibhog, Tulaipanji, Kalonunya, Badshahbhog & Talmugur) is being promoted across 11 districts of the state with Agricultural Training Centre (ATC)- Fulia giving technical and seed support (330 kg).

6 Aromatic Rices (Govindbhog, Badshahbhog, Dadsal, Radhatilak, Tulaipanji & Kanakchur) are being promoted in 14 districts with DoA providing the seeds (916 kg).

Govt Farm (6 ac) in Hanskhali,Nadia dist with 5.3 acres of land will taken up for Folk Rice production in 2016 namely-- Kalabhat (1.3 ac), Govindbhog (0.7 ac), Radhatilak (0.7 ac), Keralasundari (1.3 ac) & Dudeswar (1.3 ac)

the remaining 0.7 ac will be used for Dhaincha seed production along with Sugarcane & Banana.

They will use liquid manure, FYM and Vermicompost as inputs.

Apart from this all the 150 Govt farms will carry out Organic Farming across at least 1 acre of land in the farm thus making - 150 acres.

Under Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY)

11 districts have been taken up for Organic Production of Crops

Purulia- 22 clusters across 4 blocks (1 cluster is 50 acres)
Bankura- 20 clusters across 6 blocks
Paschim Medinipur- 22 clusters across 4 blocks
South 24 Parganas- 10 clusters across 6 blocks
North 24 Parganas- 10 clusters across 6 blocks
Uttar Dinajpur- 10 clusters across 3 blocks
Alipurduar- 10 clusters across 3 blocks
Jalpaiguri- 5 clusters across 3 blocks
Bardhaman- 4 clusters across 4 blocks
Nadia- 2 clusters across 2 blocks
Birbhum- 5 clusters 

Total - 120 clusters (6000 acres) across 11 districts & more than 41 blocks

This includes promotion of local varieties with organic inputs and PGS registration and marketing support. Every district will have a LRP (Lead Resource Person) who will facilitate PGS registration and organic compliance after 3 years. Online registration has already begun.

Indigenous Cotton along with mixed farming will be taken up in Dryland Research Institute in Bankura across 0.7 acres.

Indian Chamber of Commerce has had 2 programs in Kolkata towards promotion of Govinndobhog and Kalabhat.

Biswa Banga - the State Emporium already stocks Tualipanji, Radhatilak & Kalabhat in its outlets.
