After allowing “confined field trials” of genetically modified (GM) crops, the government put them on hold after anti-GM activists met Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis against the government decision.
The new decision was taken and letters were issued to all concerned on May 21.
“The state government has received objections from various institutions and reputed members of the society against the NOC given by it for conducting confined field trials of transgenic crops. The government has decided to put forth all the objections before the committee constituted under the chairmanship of Dr Anil Kakodkar. All the objections raised will be reviewed and scrutinised and report submitted to the government. Till that time confined research field trials should not be started,” the letter issued by the state government to all the companies said.
A senior official told The Indian Express: “Some activists and organisations met the CM and demanded that the trials should not be allowed.
The CM appreciated their concern and assured them that they will be communicated to the Kakodkar committee looking into the issue. He told them that the committee will give its opinion on the matter till which time the trials would be put on hold.”
The official further added, “The CM then also called Kakodkar to discuss the issue with the activists.”
